EV Grants and Public Charging in Ireland: What You Can Actually Claim in 2026

The purchase grant covers new battery electric cars only, but the home charger grant is a separate scheme that is not tied to buying new. What Irish buyers can actually claim, why your driveway matters more than any grant, and what to check on a used EV.

EV grants in Ireland: what you can actually claim

Most people looking at an electric car in Ireland start in the same place: how much of this does the State pay for? It is the right question, but the answer is narrower than the headlines suggest, and the part that saves you the most money is not a grant at all.

The purchase grant is for new cars. That is the whole rule.

The SEAI purchase grant applies to new battery electric cars bought through an approved dealer. If you are buying a three-year-old EV privately, that money has already been claimed by whoever bought it first — and, in fairness, it has already come off what you are paying, because the used price reflects a car that was discounted when new.

This trips people up constantly. A used EV listed at EUR 18,000 is not EUR 18,000 minus a grant. It is EUR 18,000.

Purchase grant versus home charger grant in Ireland
The purchase grant and the home charger grant are two separate schemes with different rules.

The home charger grant is separate, and it does not care whether the car is new

This is the part worth ten minutes of your evening. The home charger grant is administered separately from the purchase grant. It is tied to you owning the property and having an electric or plug-in hybrid car — not to buying that car new.

If you have just bought a used EV and assumed all the supports were gone, check again on the SEAI site before you pay for an installation out of pocket.

Two practical notes:

  • You generally need off-street parking. An apartment space or on-street parking will usually not qualify.
  • Line up the quote and the grant application before the electrician starts, not after.

Your driveway is the real subsidy

Here is the thing nobody puts in a brochure. The single biggest factor in whether an electric car is cheap to run in Ireland is whether you can charge it at home overnight on a night rate.

Home charging on a night tariff is the cheapest electricity you will buy. Charging on a fast public unit is a different world of pricing — closer to the running cost of a petrol car than most people expect once you work it out per kilometre.

So the honest order of questions is:

  1. Do I have off-street parking?
  2. Can I get a night-rate tariff?
  3. What does my week actually look like — daily commuting, or occasional long runs?

If the answer to the first two is no, an electric car can still make sense, but the money case is much thinner and you should build your budget on public charging prices, not on the figure from a review.

Where an electric car actually saves you money: overnight charging at home on a night rate.

Check the chargers on your route, not the map

Coverage maps look reassuring. What matters is whether the two or three units you would actually use — on your commute, at the shopping centre you actually go to, on the road to your parents’ house — are working and not permanently occupied.

Before committing to the car, spend a week noticing. A route with one reliable fast charger is a completely different ownership experience to a route with three unreliable ones.

Buying a used EV: ask about the battery, not the mileage

On a used electric car the odometer tells you less than it does on a petrol car. What you want is the state of health of the battery. Any decent seller or garage can pull that report, and a seller who will not is telling you something.

Judge range on a winter figure too. Every electric car loses range in cold weather, and an Irish January is not the condition the brochure number was measured in. Ask what it actually did in February, not what it says on paper.

The one running cost that is genuinely simple

Motor tax. Battery electric cars sit in the lowest band available in Ireland. It is the one line of the budget you can work out in thirty seconds and then stop thinking about.

In short

  • Purchase grant: new cars only.
  • Home charger grant: separate scheme, worth checking even on a used EV.
  • Home charging on a night rate is the real saving. Public fast charging is not close.
  • On a used EV, battery health beats mileage as a signal.
  • Judge range on a winter figure you have actually seen.
