A used car for sale

Buying used is the smart way to get value in the Irish market, but it pays to do your homework. Here's a practical checklist.

Before you view

  • Set a realistic budget including motor tax, insurance and a service.
  • Research typical prices for the make, model and year.
  • Check the seller is genuine and the address matches the documents.

At the viewing

  • View in daylight and dry weather so you can see the bodywork clearly.
  • Check the NCT certificate and disc.
  • Look for a full service history and matching mileage.
  • Test drive: brakes, steering, gearbox, and any warning lights.

Before you pay

  • Run a history check for finance, write-offs and imports.
  • Confirm VRT is paid if it's a UK import.
  • Get everything in writing.
