Buying used is the smart way to get value in the Irish market, but it pays to do your homework. Here's a practical checklist.
Before you view
- Set a realistic budget including motor tax, insurance and a service.
- Research typical prices for the make, model and year.
- Check the seller is genuine and the address matches the documents.
At the viewing
- View in daylight and dry weather so you can see the bodywork clearly.
- Check the NCT certificate and disc.
- Look for a full service history and matching mileage.
- Test drive: brakes, steering, gearbox, and any warning lights.
Before you pay
- Run a history check for finance, write-offs and imports.
- Confirm VRT is paid if it's a UK import.
- Get everything in writing.
