Toyota Aygo X Ireland Buyer Guide: New Hybrid From €24,835, Motor Tax Down to €160
The Toyota Aygo X is now a full hybrid in Ireland from €24,835, with motor tax down to €160. Here is how it compares with the 2022 to 2025 1.0 petrol, and what to check on a used one.

The Toyota Aygo X is the smallest car in Toyota Ireland's range and one of the few city cars still on sale here. It arrived in Ireland in 2022 as a 1.0 litre petrol crossover, and the latest version is now a full hybrid. That change matters for Irish buyers: the hybrid drops into a cheaper motor tax band, has far more power, and Toyota says it will no longer sell pure petrol passenger cars in Ireland. This guide covers what the new Aygo X Hybrid costs, what each version costs to tax, how much space you really get, and what to check if you are buying a used 1.0 petrol Aygo X instead.
Quick Summary
- Toyota Ireland lists the Aygo X Hybrid from €24,835 including VAT.
- The hybrid is rated at 86 to 87 g/km of CO2, so motor tax is €160 a year.
- The earlier 1.0 petrol (2022 to 2025) is 109 to 114 g/km, so €180 or €190 a year.
- Power jumps from 72 DIN hp on the petrol to 116 DIN hp on the hybrid, and 0 to 100 km/h drops to under 10 seconds.
- The boot is small at 231 litres, and the car seats four, not five.
- The first 2022 cars are now due their first NCT, so check the certificate on any used one.

New Aygo X Hybrid price in Ireland
Toyota Ireland's model page lists the Aygo X Hybrid from €24,835 including VAT. That is the starting price; higher grades add equipment such as a canvas roof, a wireless phone charger, a digital key, powered folding mirrors and nanoe X air purification, according to Toyota Ireland's launch information. Delivery and related charges are not included in the headline figure, and dealer offers, trade-in boosters and finance rates change regularly, so ask for the full on-the-road price in writing before you sign anything.
For context, when the first Aygo X opened for reservations in Ireland in February 2022, Toyota Ireland quoted a starting price of €18,035 for the 1.0 litre petrol model. The hybrid costs more, but it is a different car under the bonnet, and the running cost picture below explains where some of that money comes back.
Motor tax: hybrid versus 1.0 petrol
Cars first registered in Ireland from 2021 are taxed on their WLTP CO2 figure. Every Aygo X sold here falls under that system, so the tax depends only on the CO2 figure printed on the vehicle registration certificate.
| Aygo X version | CO2 (WLTP) | Motor tax band | Annual motor tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hybrid (latest model) | 86–87 g/km | A3 (81–90 g/km) | €160 |
| 1.0 petrol, manual | 109–110 g/km | A5 (101–110 g/km) | €180 |
| 1.0 petrol, CVT automatic | 109–114 g/km | A5 or A6 | €180 or €190 |
The saving between a petrol automatic and the hybrid is up to €30 a year on tax alone. That is not a reason to buy one car over the other, but the lower CO2 figure also comes with lower fuel use: Toyota Ireland quotes 3.8 litres per 100 km combined (WLTP) for the hybrid. Toyota's UK technical data for the earlier 1.0 petrol gives 56.5 to 58.9 mpg combined, which works out at roughly 4.0 to 4.2 litres per 100 km. If you drive mostly in town, where a hybrid can run on electric power at low speed, the gap in real driving is likely to be bigger than the test figures suggest.
Before you buy any used Aygo X, check the exact CO2 figure on the registration certificate rather than assuming a band. A petrol CVT at 111 g/km costs €10 a year more than one at 110 g/km, and you want to know that up front. For more on keeping costs down, see our guide to cutting car running costs in Ireland.
What changed with the hybrid
Toyota Ireland describes the Aygo X Hybrid as the first full hybrid in its segment. The headline changes, from Toyota's own launch information, are:
- Power: a maximum system output of 116 DIN hp, which Toyota says is 44 DIN hp more than the previous non-hybrid version.
- Performance: 0 to 100 km/h in under 10 seconds. The 1.0 petrol took 14.8 to 14.9 seconds to 62 mph, according to Toyota's UK technical data.
- Emissions: 86 g/km in Toyota's launch material, with the model page listing 87 g/km. Both figures fall in the same €160 tax band.
- Cabin tech: a new 7-inch digital driver display, an electronic parking brake and two USB-C ports as standard.
- Safety: an updated Toyota Safety Sense package, including Lane Trace Assist, Road Sign Assist, an Emergency Driving Stop System and Proactive Driving Assist, with over-the-air updates for the first time on an Aygo X.
- Refinement: extra noise insulation, plus thicker glass on higher grades.
- Hybrid battery cover: Toyota's Hybrid Battery Extended Care programme offers cover of up to 15 years or unlimited mileage when the car is serviced at a Toyota dealer.
The new front end, with a reshaped bonnet, headlamps and grille, plus 17 or 18-inch alloys depending on grade, makes the hybrid easy to tell apart from a 2022 to 2025 petrol car when you are browsing listings.

Space and practicality
The Aygo X is a city car first, and the numbers show it. Toyota quotes a 231 litre boot for the hybrid. For the earlier petrol car, Toyota's UK technical data gives 231 litres loaded to the tonneau cover, 269 litres loaded to the roof, and up to 829 litres with the rear seats folded. If the car has the optional JBL audio system, the subwoofer takes space: 189 litres to the cover and 780 litres with the seats folded.
It is also a four-seater. Toyota lists four passengers, so it will not suit a family that regularly carries three in the back. At 3,700 mm long, with a minimum turning radius of 4.7 m (tyre) on the petrol car, it is easy to park on narrow streets and in town car parks, which is where it makes the most sense.
Compared with a supermini such as the Toyota Yaris, the Aygo X gives up rear space and boot volume in exchange for a smaller footprint and a lower price. If you need a bit more room, our Toyota Yaris buyer guide covers the next size up.
The used 1.0 petrol Aygo X (2022 to 2025)
The first Aygo X reached Irish dealers from mid-April 2022. Every one of those cars uses a 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engine. Toyota's UK technical data lists:
| Spec | 1.0 VVT-i manual | 1.0 VVT-i CVT |
|---|---|---|
| Power | 72 DIN hp (53 kW) | 72 DIN hp (53 kW) |
| Torque | 93 Nm at 4,400 rpm | 93 Nm at 4,400 rpm |
| Gearbox | 5-speed manual | CVT automatic |
| 0–62 mph | 14.9 s | 14.8 s |
| CO2 (WLTP) | 109–110 g/km | 109–114 g/km |
| Kerb weight | 945–995 kg | 965–1,015 kg |
The valve gear is chain-driven according to the same data, so there is no cambelt replacement interval to budget for, unlike some rivals. The engine is not fast: 93 Nm means you need to plan overtakes on national roads, and motorway driving at 120 km/h is noisier than in a bigger car. In town it is light, easy and cheap to run.
The CVT automatic suits city driving and is worth considering if most of your miles are in traffic, but it makes the engine sound busy when you accelerate hard. Try both gearboxes on a test drive if you can.
Which Aygo X should you buy?
- Mostly town driving, buying new: the hybrid. Lower tax, lower fuel use and much better performance, and Toyota will no longer sell a pure petrol version in Ireland.
- Tight budget, short trips: a used 1.0 petrol manual. It is the cheapest way into an Aygo X, and the €20 a year tax difference against the hybrid is small.
- Want an automatic on a budget: a used 1.0 CVT, but check the exact CO2 figure, as some are in the €190 band.
- Regular motorway runs or three rear passengers: look at a bigger car. The Aygo X is a four-seater with a small boot.
Checklist before you buy a used Aygo X
- NCT: 2022 cars are now four years old and due their first NCT. Ask for the certificate and read any advisory notes.
- Service history: look for stamped or invoiced Toyota or independent services at the intervals shown in the service book. On a hybrid, dealer servicing also keeps the Hybrid Battery Extended Care cover active.
- CO2 and tax: check the CO2 figure on the registration certificate and confirm the motor tax band before you agree a price.
- Gearbox: on a CVT car, accelerate gently and firmly from a standstill. It should pull smoothly without jerks or slipping.
- Canvas roof (if fitted): open and close it fully and look for water marks on the headlining.
- Tyres and alloys: 17 and 18-inch wheels are easy to kerb in town. Check the rims and that all four tyres match.
- Recalls: give the VIN to a Toyota dealer to confirm any recall work has been done, and check the RSA recall listings.
- History check: confirm the car is not recorded as written off and has no outstanding finance.
