Opel Corsa Ireland Buyer Guide: Why the Same Engine Has Three Different Tax Bills

Here is an oddity in the Opel Corsa range that catches Irish buyers out. Three trim levels, the same 1.2-litre 100hp turbo petrol engine in all of them, and three different annual motor tax bills: EUR 190, EUR 190 and EUR 200. Nothing under the bonnet changes. The wheels do.

This guide sets out what each version of the Corsa actually costs to tax, how the 48-volt hybrid compares with the manual petrol, and what to check before you buy one used.

Opel Corsa Ireland overview: the current range

The Corsa is a conventional five-door supermini, 4,060mm long on a 2,538mm wheelbase and 1,433mm tall. Opel sells it here in three trims - SC, Elegance and GS - with a choice of a 1.2-litre turbo petrol driving through a six-speed manual, or the same engine with 48-volt hybrid assistance and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Both engines are the same 1,199cc three-cylinder unit producing 100hp (74kW) at 5,500rpm and 205Nm at 1,750rpm, with a top speed of 190km/h. The difference between them is the electrical assistance and the gearbox, not the power output.

Boot volume is 309 litres with the rear seats up, rising to 1,118 litres folded. That is modest even by supermini standards, so it is worth measuring against what you actually carry rather than taking the class label at face value.

Opel Ireland publishes WLTP CO2, tax band and annual road tax against every version in its price and specification guide. Set out side by side, the pattern is unusually clear:

Look at the petrol column. SC and Elegance are quoted at 118 g/km, which falls in the 111-120 band at EUR 190 a year. GS is quoted at 121 g/km, which falls in the 121-130 band at EUR 200.

The engine is identical. What changes is that SC runs 16-inch steel wheels, Elegance runs 16-inch alloys, and GS runs 17-inch diamond-cut alloys on the same 195/55 tyre profile. Three grams of CO2, one band boundary, EUR 10 a year - decided by a wheel choice most buyers make on looks alone.

The hybrid sidesteps the question entirely. At 102-104 g/km it sits in the 101-110 band at EUR 180 across every trim, which makes it the cheapest Corsa to tax whichever specification you pick.

Opel Corsa Hybrid: what the 48-volt system does

The Corsa Hybrid pairs the turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission running on a 48-volt system. Opel claims fuel consumption savings of up to 18 per cent against the non-electrified car, and says the system allows fully electric running up to 50 per cent of the time in urban driving. There is no plug and no charging cable.

The official figures back the direction of travel: 4.5-4.6 litres/100km for the hybrid against 5.3-5.4 for the manual petrol. With a 45-litre tank, that is a meaningful difference over a year of town driving.

The hybrid is also the only automatic in the petrol line-up, which for many buyers in city traffic is the deciding factor before fuel enters the conversation. It carries roughly a EUR 3,600 premium over the equivalent petrol trim.

What you get on each Corsa trim

• SC - 16-inch steel wheels with flush covers, Eco LED headlamps, LED daytime running lights, manual air conditioning, cruise control with speed limiter, a 10-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 3.5-inch driver information cluster, DAB radio, six speakers, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX on the outer rear seats.
• Elegance - adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch multi-colour driver information cluster and additional comfort equipment.
• GS - adds 17-inch gloss black diamond-cut alloys, a high-gloss black lower front grille, front as well as rear parking sensors, a panoramic rear view camera, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

Across the range Opel fits active lane keep assist, enhanced traffic sign recognition and a driver monitoring camera covering forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning and speed sign recognition. Side blind spot alert appears on the higher trims. Every Corsa carries a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel.

What to check before buying a used Opel Corsa

• Check the wheels, then the paperwork. A GS on 17-inch alloys is quoted at 121 g/km and costs EUR 200 a year; the same engine on 16-inch wheels is 118 g/km and EUR 190. Confirm the figure for the individual car on motortax.ie.
• Establish whether it is the hybrid. The 48-volt car is an automatic and taxed at EUR 180. From the outside the two are hard to tell apart.
• Test the dual-clutch gearbox from cold if you are looking at a hybrid, paying attention to low-speed take-up and any hesitation in traffic.
• Check the service record against the schedule. Opel quotes a 20,000km or one-year service interval for this engine.
• Confirm the tyre repair kit is present and in date. There is no spare wheel in any Corsa, and the sealant has a shelf life.
• Load the boot before you commit. 309 litres is tight, and it is easier to discover that in a car park than after you have bought.

Opel has one of the longest-established dealer networks in the country, and the Corsa shares its 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine and much of its hardware with a wide range of related models, which keeps servicing and parts straightforward. Verdict: is a used Opel Corsa a good buy in Ireland?

Yes, provided you buy the right one. The Corsa is well equipped even in entry SC form, carries a full set of driver assistance systems as standard, and is cheap to run on either powertrain.

The value pick is an Elegance petrol: 16-inch alloys, the larger driver display, and EUR 190 a year in tax. The GS looks better and costs more to tax for no extra performance. And if you drive mainly in town or want an automatic, the hybrid at EUR 180 a year and 4.5 litres/100km makes its own case - just not on the tax line alone.
