Car Dealers in Tipperary guide contents

Tipperary's car dealers are spread across the county rather than packed into one town. If you are looking for car dealers in Tipperary, or for used cars in Tipperary, you will find franchised showrooms on the main roads into Clonmel, a cluster on the Limerick Road in Nenagh, and dealers in Thurles, Tipperary town, Roscrea, Cahir and Templemore. This guide shows where the dealers are, lists the main franchised dealers by brand, and covers the checks and consumer rights that matter before you sign for any car.

Quick Summary

  • Clonmel and Nenagh have the biggest clusters of franchised showrooms in our list, with more in Thurles, Roscrea, Tipperary town, Cahir and Templemore.
  • Every dealer in our table was checked against the manufacturer's Irish dealer locator or the dealer's own website.
  • Before you buy, check the NCT history, service record, outstanding finance and any open recalls, and look up the motor tax rate on motortax.ie.
  • Buying from a dealer gives you rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2022, including the right to reject a faulty car within 30 days of delivery.

Where the dealers are

Three main routes shape where Tipperary's dealers sit. The M7 crosses the north of the county between Dublin and Limerick, with junctions for Roscrea and Nenagh. The M8 runs north to south between the M7 in Laois and Cork, with junctions for Thurles, Horse and Jockey, Cashel and Cahir. The N24 links Limerick and Waterford through Tipperary town, Cahir, Clonmel and on towards Carrick-on-Suir.

Clonmel

Clonmel has franchised dealers on several of its approach roads: Davis Road, the Cashel Road, the Cahir Road and the Powerstown Road. Between them they cover Ford, Hyundai, Toyota, Opel, Renault, Dacia and Škoda. The N24 bypasses the north of the town.

Thurles

Thurles has Renault, Citroën, Suzuki and Kia dealers, the Kia dealer trading under the Horse and Jockey name. Thurles is signposted from M8 junctions 5 and 6, and from the M7 at junctions 22 and 25.

Nenagh

The Limerick Road in Nenagh is the main dealer strip in north Tipperary, with Toyota, Ford and Nissan dealers and, from August 2026, a new Citroën showroom off the M7. The town is served by M7 junctions 24 and 25.

Tipperary town

Pierse Motors Volkswagen Tipperary is on the Limerick Road. The N24 passes through the town.

Cashel

The M8 bypasses Cashel, with junctions 7 to 9 signed for the town. None of the franchised dealers in our table is based in Cashel; the nearest are in Thurles, Cahir and Clonmel.

Carrick-on-Suir

Carrick-on-Suir sits on the N24 east of Clonmel, near the Waterford border. None of the franchised dealers in our table is based in the town, so the nearest showrooms listed here are in Clonmel, further west along the N24.

Roscrea

Roscrea has an Opel dealer on the Limerick Road. The town is reached from M7 junction 22, which also leads to the N62 for Templemore and Thurles.

Cahir

Cahir has Morrison BMW, a BMW and MINI dealer, on the Cork Road. The N24 meets the M8 at junction 10 just outside the town, and M8 junction 11 is also signed for Cahir.

Buying a used car in Tipperary: local tips

How cars are driven in Tipperary affects what you should look for in a used one.

  • Rural mileage: distances between towns, farms and schools add up, so many cars here have done more miles than a city car of the same age. A higher reading is not a problem in itself; what matters is that it is consistent with the NCT history and backed by regular servicing.
  • Farm and work use: a car or 4x4 used on a farm may have towed trailers or spent time on lanes and yards. Look for a towbar, check the underside for damage or heavy corrosion, and ask how the car was used. Listen for clutch and gearbox wear on a test drive.
  • Commuter and motorway miles: cars that spent their lives on the M7 to Dublin or Limerick, or the M8 to Cork, can have high mileage but steady, easy use. Check for stone chips on the bonnet and windscreen and for even tyre wear, and make sure the service intervals were kept.
  • Service history: ask for stamps or invoices that match the mileage. A gap in the record is worth a question; it does not always mean a problem, but the dealer should be able to explain it.
  • Test drive routes: try to cover a mix of roads. Some town traffic shows how the car copes with stop and start driving, a stretch of the N24 or a regional road shows the suspension and steering, and a short run on the motorway reveals noise, vibration or pulling at speed. Turn off the radio and air conditioning so you can hear any problems.
  • Servicing after you buy: if you live outside the bigger towns, check where the nearest main dealer for that brand is before you commit, especially for warranty work and recalls.

Checklist before you sign

  1. NCT certificate and history: check that the car has a valid NCT on ncts.ie. The CCPC notes that the NCT certificate shows the mileage at the latest test and the three before it; readings that go down or jump around may be a sign the car has been clocked.
  2. Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC): make sure the details, including engine size, fuel type, registration date and colour, match the car in front of you, and that documents are originals, not photocopies.
  3. Service history: stamps or invoices for each service, in line with the mileage.
  4. Recall check: give the vehicle identification number (VIN) to a main dealer for that brand, or use the manufacturer's online check where one exists, to see if any recall work is outstanding.
  5. Finance check: confirm there is no hire purchase or PCP agreement still on the car. If there is, the car could be repossessed. A paid history check can also show write-offs and mileage records.
  6. Motor tax: look up the current rate for the car's registration on motortax.ie. You can only tax the car once the change of ownership has been processed; an approved dealer can notify the change online.
  7. The deal in writing: get the full price, any warranty terms and any extras in writing before you sign.

Your rights when buying from a dealer

When you buy from a dealer, you are protected by the Consumer Rights Act 2022. According to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), the same rights apply to new and used cars, although the quality you can expect from a used car should reflect its age and price.

  • Within 30 days of delivery: if a fault appears, you can generally cancel the purchase and get a full refund without first accepting a repair or replacement.
  • After 30 days: you can normally ask for a repair or replacement.
  • If a repair does not work: where repair or replacement is not possible or does not fix the problem, you may be entitled to a price reduction or a full refund, depending on how serious the fault is.
  • What is not covered: faults caused by misuse, accidents or normal wear and tear, such as worn tyres or brakes.
  • Private sales are different: you do not have the same rights when you buy from another consumer. A trader posing as a private seller is treated as a dealer, and the CCPC says this practice is illegal.

Report any fault to the dealer in writing and keep copies of emails, messages and receipts. The CCPC's car problems and your rights page explains the next steps if a dealer does not respond.

Browse used cars

Before you visit a showroom, it helps to see what similar cars cost elsewhere in the country. You can browse used cars for sale across Ireland on EcoSteer, with petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric cars from dealers and private sellers in one place. If you already have a brand in mind, start with used Toyota cars or used Volkswagen cars, both brands with dealers in Tipperary, and compare age, mileage and spec before you travel.
