The Mazda CX-30 is a compact SUV that sits between the Mazda2 and the larger CX-5. It arrived in Ireland at the end of 2019 and is still sold new in 2026. For anyone looking at a used Mazda CX-30 in Ireland, two things matter more than the trim name. The first is the registration year: Mazda Ireland moved to a 6-year or 150,000km warranty for every model registered from January 2023, so a 2023-on CX-30 can still be under factory cover today. The second is the CO2 figure on the registration certificate, which puts Mazda CX-30 motor tax anywhere from €190 to €270 a year depending on the engine and the year.

Below: the versions sold here, motor tax by version, petrol versus Skyactiv-X, the warranty, safety, the recall position and the checks to make before you pay.

Which Mazda CX-30 versions were sold in Ireland?

When the CX-30 was shown to Irish media in mid-2019, Mazda listed three engines: the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol with 122hp, the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-X petrol with 180hp and a 1.8-litre diesel with 116hp. Mazda said Irish pricing would sit about €2,000 above the Mazda3 hatchback. By 2020 the range started from €29,495 for the Skyactiv-G, and the GT trim Changing Lanes tested cost €33,395.

From 2021 the Skyactiv-X was updated to the e-Skyactiv X with 186hp. Changing Lanes priced that version from €39,165 in its 2021 review. All petrol engines use Mazda's M Hybrid mild-hybrid system, which helps the engine but cannot drive the car on electric power alone. There is no plug-in hybrid or fully electric CX-30.

The current car on Mazda Ireland's site uses a larger 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G petrol with 140hp and 238Nm. The Prime-Line with a six-speed manual and front-wheel drive is listed at €35,655 on the road. Mazda quotes 6.0 l/100km and 135 g/km on the WLTP combined cycle for that version, and 0 to 100km/h in 9.7 seconds.

How much is Mazda CX-30 motor tax?

Ireland uses two motor tax tables. Cars registered here from 2008 to the end of 2020 are taxed on the older CO2 bands: €190 for 101 to 110 g/km, €200 for 111 to 120 and €270 for 121 to 130. Cars registered from January 2021 use the WLTP table: €200 for 121 to 130 g/km, €210 for 131 to 140 and €270 for 141 to 150. The CO2 figure printed on the Vehicle Registration Certificate decides the band, not the brochure.

Mazda CX-30 registered 2019 to 2020 (older table)

  • 2.0 Skyactiv-G 122hp, 103 g/km NEDC (Changing Lanes test car, 2020): band A3, €190 a year

Changing Lanes quoted €200 a year for that car, which is the band for 111 to 120 g/km. Bigger wheels or a higher trim can push the official figure up a band, so read the certificate on the car you are looking at.

Mazda CX-30 registered 2021 on (WLTP table)

  • 2.0 e-Skyactiv X 186hp, 128 g/km (Changing Lanes, 2021): €200 a year
  • 2.5 e-Skyactiv G 140hp Prime-Line manual, 135 g/km (Mazda Ireland, current): €210 a year
  • 2.0 Skyactiv-G 122hp at 141 g/km WLTP (the figure quoted for the 2020 test car): €270 a year

The 140 g/km line is the one to watch. A 2021-on CX-30 certified at 140 g/km pays €210, while one at 141 g/km pays €270. That is €60 a year for one gram, so it is worth comparing two similar cars on this alone. Changing Lanes quoted €210 for the 2021 Skyactiv-X it tested, so again, trust the certificate over any review.

Skyactiv-G or Skyactiv-X: which CX-30 suits Irish driving?

2.0 Skyactiv-G 122hp petrol. The simplest and most common choice. Changing Lanes averaged 6.5 l/100km over a week of mixed driving, against a 6.2 l/100km WLTP rating. It is naturally aspirated, so you need to rev it on hills and when overtaking, but it suits a car that does a lot of town and regional-road driving.

2.0 Skyactiv-X and e-Skyactiv X. Mazda's high-compression petrol was meant to bring diesel-like economy. In Irish testing it did not: Changing Lanes recorded 7.2 l/100km in the 186hp Skyactiv-X and found the 122hp Skyactiv-G more economical in its experience, at 6.5 l/100km. The reviewer also felt the engine never felt as strong as its numbers suggest. The Skyactiv-X cost more new, so only pay extra for one if you want the higher trims it usually came with.

1.8 Skyactiv-D diesel. Listed at the Irish media preview with 116hp and 270Nm. If you find one, it makes most sense for long motorway commutes. Check its certificate for the exact CO2 and motor tax band.

2.5 e-Skyactiv G 140hp. The newest engine, fitted to the CX-30 Mazda Ireland sells now. More power and torque than the old 2.0, and 135 g/km keeps it in the €210 band on the manual Prime-Line.

Mazda's 6-year warranty and what it means for a used CX-30

In November 2022 Mazda Ireland announced that it was doubling the warranty on its whole range to 6 years or 150,000km for all models registered from January 2023. In practice that splits the used CX-30 market in two:

  • Registered 2019 to 2022: these cars came with the shorter warranty in place before the change, so they are now outside the factory warranty. Budget for repairs yourself or look at an extended warranty.
  • Registered 2023 or later: 6 years or 150,000km from first registration, whichever comes first. A January 2023 car is covered until January 2029 if the mileage limit has not been reached.

Before you buy, ask a Mazda dealer to confirm the first registration date, the warranty end date and whether the cover carries on to you as the next owner. Mazda says its authorised dealers record servicing in a Digital Service Book, which the brand introduced in 2006, so a dealer can usually see the car's main-dealer history. Mazda also says its Mazda Assistance roadside cover is renewed for another year each time the car is serviced at an authorised dealer, up to 10 years of age.

What should I watch for on a used Mazda CX-30?

Recall on record

The RSA's recall lists for 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 show Mazda recalls for the CX-60, CX-90 and MX-5, but no CX-30 entry. That is reassuring, but it does not cover every year. Give the VIN to a Mazda dealer and ask them to confirm that no campaign is open on the car.

Safety rating

Euro NCAP gave the CX-30 five stars in 2019, with 99% for adult occupant protection, 86% for child occupants, 80% for vulnerable road users and 77% for safety assist. The 99% adult score was among the highest Euro NCAP recorded that year. The current Irish Prime-Line comes with blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, radar cruise control, lane-keep assist and a reversing camera as standard.

Space and comfort

The boot holds about 430 litres, against 358 litres in the Mazda3 hatch, and Mazda Ireland quotes 422 to 430 litres for the current car. The rear seats are the weak spot. Irish reviewers described rear legroom as tight, especially for taller passengers. If you regularly carry adults in the back, sit in the rear seat before you buy. If you need more room, look at the larger CX-5 in our Mazda CX-5 Ireland buyer guide.

What should I check before buying a used Mazda CX-30 in Ireland?

  1. CO2 and tax: read the CO2 figure on the Vehicle Registration Certificate and match it to the pre-2021 or WLTP table. On 2021-on cars, check whether it is above or below 140 g/km.
  2. Registration date: a car registered from January 2023 can still have the 6-year factory warranty. Confirm the end date with a Mazda dealer.
  3. Service history: ask a Mazda dealer to check the Digital Service Book and look for invoices for any independent servicing.
  4. NCT certificate: compare recorded mileages over time. Falling or inconsistent readings can signal clocking.
  5. History and finance: run a vehicle history check and make sure any hire purchase or PCP finance is cleared before you pay.
  6. Engine type: confirm whether it is Skyactiv-G, Skyactiv-X or the 2.5 e-Skyactiv G, as the badge on the back is easy to miss.
  7. Rear seats: sit behind the driver's seat set for a tall driver, and check the boot fits your buggy or sports bags.
  8. Test drive: try the gear change, listen for knocks over bumps and check all the driver assistance warnings work.

When does a Mazda CX-30 need an NCT?

Cars first need an NCT at four years old, then every two years until their tenth-anniversary test, and every year after that. A CX-30 first registered in early 2020 had its first test in 2024 and its next one in 2026. A 2023 car is due its first test in 2027.

The RSA lists the most common fail items across all cars as worn tyres, faulty brake lines, seat belts, exhaust condition and defective suspension. Over 80% of four-year-old cars pass first time.

Verdict: is a used Mazda CX-30 a good buy in Ireland?

Yes, if the rear seat is big enough for you. It is well made, it scored 99% for adult protection in its crash test, and motor tax is reasonable at €190 to €210 for most versions. The best buys are 2023-on cars, because they can still be inside the 6-year warranty. On a 2021 or 2022 car, check the CO2 figure: anything above 140 g/km costs €270 a year. Pay extra for a Skyactiv-X only for the trim, not for fuel savings. If you are comparing it with another compact SUV, read our Toyota C-HR Ireland buyer guide.
