The Volvo XC90 is the big seven-seat SUV many Irish families move to when they outgrow a mid-size crossover. The current shape arrived in 2015, and Volvo Cars Ireland now sells it only as a plug-in hybrid. Used buyers can choose from older diesels, the B5 mild hybrid diesel and several versions of the T8 plug-in. This Volvo XC90 Ireland ownership guide explains what changed and when, how far the plug-in really goes, what the seven seats are like and which RSA recalls to check.

Quick Summary

  • The first XC90 was shown at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2002. Volvo built 636,143 of them before production ended in July 2014.
  • The second generation uses only four-cylinder engines and was updated in 2019, 2024 and 2026.
  • In Ireland the XC90 is now sold only as a plug-in hybrid. The 2027 model year T8 AWD Long range is listed from €93,995 (Volvo Cars Ireland, checked 6 November 2026).
  • Volvo quotes up to 162 km of electric range for the long-range T8 (preliminary WLTP). Earlier T8 versions are far shorter.
  • Euro NCAP gave the XC90 five stars in 2015, with 100% for Safety Assist.
  • The RSA lists five recall campaigns from 2023 to 2025 that include the XC90.

Volvo XC90 generations in Ireland

There are only two generations, but the second has changed a lot under the skin. Key dates from Volvo press material and Irish road tests:

GenerationYearsWhat a buyer should know
First2002 to 2014Five and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, plus a V8 from 2004. Condition and history matter more than the badge now.
Second (launch)2015 to 2019First Volvo on the SPA platform. Four-cylinder engines only: D4 and D5 diesels and the T8 Twin Engine plug-in.
Second (2019 update)2019 to 2024B5 mild hybrid diesel replaces the D5. Bigger T8 battery, later badged XC90 Recharge T8.
Second (2024 update)2025 deliveries onNew front end and a free-standing 11.2-inch touchscreen. Ireland gets the T8 plug-in only.
Second (long range)Orders from September 2026Larger battery and stronger electric motor. Up to 162 km electric range quoted.

Volvo says the first XC90 took 15,000 orders before sales started and won more than 100 international awards. It brought Roll Stability Control, side curtain airbags for all three rows and an integrated booster cushion in the middle row.

Volvo XC90 engines sold in Ireland: diesel, mild hybrid and plug-in

By 2016 the entry point in Ireland was a front-wheel drive D4 diesel, which CompleteCar listed from €63,450. Most other versions are all-wheel drive with an eight-speed automatic.

VersionPeriodPowerNotes
D4 FWD dieselTested in Ireland in 2016190hpFront-wheel drive entry model.
D5 AWD diesel2015 to 2019225hp, 470 NmTwin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel.
T8 Twin Engine plug-in2015 to 2019About 400hp, 640 Nm2.0 petrol plus rear electric motor.
B5 AWD mild hybrid diesel2019 to 2024235hp, 480 Nm48-volt system. From €77,970 in 2019.
T8 Recharge plug-in2019 to 2024390hp (2019 figure)11.6 kWh battery, up to 28.6 miles electric.
T8 plug-in (2024 update)From 2025455hp, 709 Nm14.7 kWh usable, 71 km claimed.
T8 AWD Long range2027 model year461hpUp to 162 km (preliminary WLTP).

Other European markets still get a B5 mild hybrid petrol. Volvo Cars Ireland says the XC90 is only available as a plug-in hybrid here, so a mild hybrid in Ireland is either an older B5 diesel or an import.

The Volvo XC90 Recharge T8: how far the plug-in really goes

The "Recharge" badge confuses many buyers. Volvo used it on its plug-in hybrids from around 2020, so an "XC90 Recharge T8" is a petrol plug-in hybrid, not a full electric car.

Electric range depends on the year:

  • T8 Twin Engine (2015 to 2019): the 2019 update raised the battery from 10.4 kWh to 11.6 kWh and official range from 21.7 to 28.6 miles.
  • 2024 update: CompleteCar quotes a 14.7 kWh usable battery and 71 km claimed, but expected closer to 50 km in normal driving. With the battery empty, its test car averaged 9.2 litres per 100 km.
  • Long range (2027 model year): more than two and a half times the range of the previous plug-in, says Volvo. Volvo Cars Ireland lists up to 162 km and a full charge in around four hours on an 11 kW AC charger (preliminary, certification pending).

A T8 makes sense if you can charge at home and most trips are short. On long motorway runs a heavy plug-in on petrol can use more fuel than a diesel. Our guide to electric vs hybrid vs petrol in Ireland walks through that choice.

Is the Volvo XC90 a real 7 seater?

Yes. Seven seats were standard on the cars CompleteCar tested in Ireland, though the current Irish configurator also lists five and six-seat layouts, so check the exact car.

Boot space in the current T8 is 262 litres with all seven seats in use, 668 litres with the third row folded and 1,959 litres with only the front seats up. Volvo Cars Ireland quotes up to 1,934 litres for the long-range car. The space behind the third row is modest, so test it with your buggy.

On the updated car the two ISOFIX points are both in the outer middle-row seats, with an integrated child booster in the middle row. The braked towing limit is 2,400 kg, useful for a caravan or horsebox.

CompleteCar praised the cabin quality and seat comfort, and every Irish T8 from the 2024 update has air suspension.

Safety: the 2015 Euro NCAP result

Euro NCAP tested the second-generation XC90 in 2015 and gave it five stars. Volvo says it scored 100% in Safety Assist and was the first car to get full points in Euro NCAP's car-to-car rear-end emergency braking tests. Euro NCAP named it Best in Class for large off-roaders in 2015 and the best overall performer of that year.

The tests have become much stricter since 2015, so this rating is not directly comparable with a recent one.

Volvo XC90 problems and recalls: five RSA campaigns to check

We checked the RSA recall pages for 2022 to 2026. The 2022 page listed no entries when we checked, and no 2026 campaign names the XC90 so far. Five campaigns from 2023 to 2025 include it.

RSA dateIssueXC90 build datesCars in Ireland
24 January 2023Brake control module software error could, in rare cases, remove braking support. A "Stop Safely, Brake failure" message shows and the pedal feels stiff.11 October 2022 to 13 January 2023391 across ten Volvo models
8 December 2023Second-row seat belt and buckle anchorage bolts may not be correctly secured.12 January 2014 to 29 September 202343 XC90s
19 November 2024Rod between the brake pedal and brake booster may not be tightened correctly.27 May 2019 to 13 August 2020 (all models in the campaign)52 across eight models
21 March 2025High-voltage battery may have a manufacturing defect that could cause cells to overheat when fully charged. On the XC90 this means the T8 plug-in.29 April 2019 to 29 November 2021199 across six models
13 June 2025Braking may be temporarily disabled after coasting downhill with "B" mode selected on plug-in hybrids.24 July 2019 to 11 June 2025473 across five models

Three campaigns involve braking and two affect the plug-in, so a T8 built between 2019 and mid-2025 needs the closest check. Ask a Volvo dealer to confirm by chassis number that every recall is done. We have not listed problems from forums or owner reports, because we could not verify them from an official source.

Buying a used Volvo XC90 in Ireland: what to check

A used Volvo XC90 in Ireland is a lot of car for the money, but it is a heavy, complex SUV. Before you agree a price:

  • Recalls: match the build date to the table above and get written proof.
  • Service history: regular stamps, and for plug-in cars, records of battery or software updates.
  • Plug-in battery: charge it fully and compare the range shown with the figures above.
  • Air suspension: the car should sit level with no warning lights.
  • Tyres: large wheels mean expensive tyres, so check the tread.
  • Third row: fold and raise every seat and test the belts and buckles.
  • Screens: test the touchscreen, camera and phone connection.
  • NCT: check the certificate and advisory notes. See our guide on how to pass the NCT first time.

Do a history check on any import, especially a post-2024 B5 mild hybrid petrol, which Volvo Cars Ireland does not sell new.

What does a used Volvo XC90 cost?

Prices move week to week and depend on engine, trim, mileage and history. New, Volvo Cars Ireland lists the 2027 model year T8 AWD Long range from €93,995 for Core, €96,550 for Plus, €98,800 for Plus Pro, €103,150 for Ultra and €107,995 for Ultra Pro, with Black Edition versions at €99,250 and €109,245 (checked 6 November 2026). For used cars, compare current listings on EcoSteer.

Is the Volvo XC90 right for you?

The XC90 suits a family that wants seven real seats, a calm cabin, a strong towing limit and a proven safety record. A late T8 makes most sense if you can charge at home. An older diesel can still be a sensible tow car if the history is clean.

It suits you less if you need a big boot with all seven seats up or three ISOFIX points. Compare it with the Hyundai Santa Fe model guide or the Kia Sorento model guide.

When you are ready to look at real cars, browse all used Volvo cars on EcoSteer and check each one against the recall table above.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Volvo XC90 a good used car in Ireland?

For most families, yes. It has seven seats, a comfortable cabin, a 2,400 kg towing limit and a five-star Euro NCAP rating from 2015. Check the recalls for its build date and the service history.

Can you buy a new Volvo XC90 with a diesel or mild hybrid engine in Ireland?

No. Volvo Cars Ireland says the XC90 is only available as a plug-in hybrid. Used D4, D5 and B5 diesels are still around.

How far can a Volvo XC90 Recharge T8 go on electricity?

It depends on the year: up to 28.6 miles for 2019 cars, 71 km claimed after the 2024 update and up to 162 km (preliminary WLTP) for the 2027 long-range T8. Real-world range is usually lower.

Is the Volvo XC90 a proper 7 seater?

Yes. Seven seats were standard on the Irish cars tested by CompleteCar. Boot space with all seven seats in use is 262 litres, so luggage space is limited when the car is full.

What are the most common Volvo XC90 problems and recalls in Ireland?

The RSA lists five campaigns from 2023 to 2025 that include the XC90: brake software, second-row seat belt bolts, a brake pedal rod, a plug-in battery defect and a B mode braking issue. Have a Volvo dealer confirm they are done.
