About Mooney's Hyundai

On its own website, Mooney's Garage describes itself as an Irish-owned and family-run business dedicated to new and used car sales. According to its About page, the Mooney family has been selling cars on the Long Mile Road in Dublin since 1973.

The dealership has represented Hyundai in Ireland since 1998, and it is listed on Hyundai Ireland's official dealer pages as Mooney's Hyundai Longmile Road. In late 2016 the business was appointed as a Hyundai dealer in Deansgrange, giving it a second sales location in south Dublin, also listed on Hyundai Ireland's dealer pages. It also runs a Hyundai service centre in Sandyford, just off the M50 at Junction 14.

The Long Mile Road dealership is at Walkinstown, Dublin 12 (Eircode D12 YKX4), a short walk from the Luas line according to the dealer. Its website lists the current Hyundai range, from the i20, KONA and Tucson (including hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions) to the Inster, IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9, plus the STARIA van. Used stock is not limited to Hyundai, and the dealer says it covers petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles, with manual and automatic models.

Buying a car in Dublin

Whether you are buying from Mooney's or any other dealer in Dublin, a few simple checks will help you buy with confidence:

  • Check the NCT. In Ireland, cars must have their first NCT at four years old, then every two years, and every year once the car reaches ten years old. Look at the NCT certificate and its expiry date, and you can check when a car is next due on the official NCTS website.
  • Ask for the service history. A stamped service book or dealer printout shows whether the car has been maintained on time. For hybrids and EVs, ask whether any battery health information is available.
  • Take a proper test drive. Try the car on roads you know, including faster roads such as the M50 if you can. Listen for unusual noises, check the brakes and make sure all the electrics work.
  • Get everything in writing. Make sure the price, any trade-in value, warranty terms and finance details are written down before you sign.
  • Know your consumer rights. When you buy from a dealer, the Consumer Rights Act 2022 protects you. The car must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and durable, and for a used car its quality should reflect its age and price. If a fault appears within 30 days of delivery, you can generally cancel the purchase without having to accept a repair. After that, the dealer should normally offer a repair or replacement. These rights are separate from any warranty, and private sales do not carry the same protection. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has clear guidance on buying a car.
